History of Our Positive Coaching (PCA) Program
The Jack London Youth Soccer League formed a partnership in summer 2002 with the Positive Coaching Alliance (www.positivecoach.org). Ed Shriger, our League’s Coaching Director, best described the mission of our Positive Coaching program best: “We want to weave the positive coaching model into the social fabric of Jack London youth soccer.”

The League and its Clubs sponsor several PCA workshops each year. As of 2005 parent workshops are part of New Parents Nights, orientations for new soccer parents. Coaches attend Positive Coaching (PCA) workshops specifically for them. These PCA workshops are free to all coaches and parents in the League. Here’s how we’ve built our Positive Coaching program:

 Year 1: “Deep Reach” – In 2002-2003 we offered a large number of workshops to make the PCA program accessible across the League. The Board established a PCA Task Force to spearhead organizing 16 workshops, and over 1,400 parents and coaches attended. The League made minimum participation (at least 2 parents & 1 coach per team) mandatory for participation in the JLYSL end-of-season tournament for U10+ teams.

 Year 2: “Fill in the Gaps” – In 2003-2004 we targeted those who were not able to attend workshops in the prior year. In 2003-2004 the League and its Clubs organized 8 PCA workshops, with over 750 participants. The Board established a PCA Committee, consisting of representatives from most of the Clubs. The League continued its minimum participation requirement (at least 2 parents & 1 coach per team).

 Year 3: “Make it Sustainable” – In 2004-2005 we continued the past participation requirement, with some Clubs requiring additional participation. One Club piloted a program to make participation in a PCA workshop required for all new U8 parents and coaches, with a PCA workshop included in an orientation (“New Parents Night”).

 Year 4: “Sustainable for More Clubs” – In 2005-2006 Rockridge, Montclair and Alameda incorporated PCA workshops as part of their orientation for new parents and coaches, targeting U6 and U8 divisions. Piedmont incorporated PCA workshops as part of orientation for new coaches for its U8 program. Rockridge and Montclair partnered to host a "Coaches Day," a highly successful event combining field training and coaching orientation with a PCA workshop for coaches.

 Year 5: “Autopilot” – In 2006-2007 Rockridge, Montclair, Alameda and Piedmont continued to host PCA workshops as part of orientation for their U6 and U8 programs. We held a well attended "last call" workshop in October hosted jointly by Piedmont and Bay Oaks.

 Year 6: “Community” – In 2007-2008 Rockridge, Montclair, Alameda and Piedmont will continue to host PCA workshops as part of orientation for U6 and U8 programs. We will again hold a "last call" workshop in October. We will also have a PCA workshop for League Board members and leadership, focusing on how to address League-wide challenges.

At the end of 2006, our League and its Clubs have organized over 50 PCA workshops and over 5,000 of parents and coaches in our League have participated in workshops. Given the quality of the presentations, and the overwhelming positive comments about the experience, the program continues to be an unqualified success in terms of workshop participation.

Where are we with the Positive Coaching (PCA) Program in 2007?  For the 2007-2007 season, all Coaches must have attended a PCA workshop. (See Participation Requirement for more info.) All new parents are expected to attend a PCA workshop in their child's first season of soccer. Our four largest Clubs -- Alameda, Montclair, Piedmont, Rockridge -- host parent orientations that include a PCA workshop. All parents across the League are welcome to attend. See Workshop Schedules for dates & locations.

Parents and Coaches are welcome to attend any PCA workshop, regardless of Club.
