FAQs for New & Prospective Referees
Why should I referee?
It is an excellent way to get into shape, learn the rules, and help your soccer club and community, build camaraderie with other officials, and earn extra money. You also have the best seat in the house.
How do I become a referee?
To register for the online USSF Referee courses, see https://www.cnra.net/new-referee/ for details. After you complete all the online assignments you are required to attend an in-person field session. Your badge will be mailed to you upon completion of the field session.
How old do I need to be?
The minimum age for referees is 13.
Is there a big time commitment?
It is entirely at your discretion. If you can referee just one game (between 1 to 2 hours) a week, that will help a lot. Of course, you can do more games if you want.
What about the referee uniform?
All new referees must purchase a uniform and referee equipment. See https://officialsports.com/off-field-apparel/starter-kits/ for details. The starter kit includes a complete uniform (yellow shirt, black shorts and socks), whistle, lanyard, red and yellow cards,
cardholder and flags.
Will I be reimbursed for the cost of the uniform?
No, not directly at least. Referees are independent contractors, free to work for any club or league. Maintaining your uniform and equipment is part of the cost of doing business as an independent contractor. However, to encourage new refs to work for JLYSL we pay a modest bonus upon completion of 6 games.
Do I get paid?
Yes of course! We pay referees for all games. See http://www.jlysl.org/referee-pay.html for details.
Is this program for my son or daughter?
Yes! Besides the relatively good pay for youths, refereeing is a great way to gain confidence and bearing. Youth referees are normally assigned to lower age group games involving the Under 10 and Under 12 age groups.
Am I going to be thrown out to the wolves?
Absolutely not! We want our new referees to be successful. The Referee Assignors will ensure that you are assigned to the games that you are comfortable with. We will send experience referees to go out and watch new referees. You can also request a mentor to come out to help you.
Okay, I'm interested. Who can I call for more information?
