What People in our League are Saying about Positive Coaching - PCA Testimonials
“I had the opportunity this week to attend the Positive Coaching Alliance workshop that [our team’s coach] has been encouraging us to attend. It was more than fantastic! The presenters / leaders are extremely entertaining and have the necessary experience to be leading these workshops. My session was led by a dynamic basketball coach, who was more than willing to share anecdotes of how he had applied the PCA philosophy and it worked and how he was less than successful when we wasn't using the PCA concepts. The coaches from our youngest daughter's soccer team had a female field hockey coach who sounded equally dynamic.”
"It gave me a great perspective on youth sports and how to be the best parent possible to children playing youth sports. Our session got out much earlier than the advertised completion time of 10 pm. When I got home, I was so inspired that [my husband] and I spoke for a long while about the material presented and how it related to what we are doing as a family, with two daughters in organized sports.”
“I just returned from attending the first presentation for PCA. I strongly recommend it to all Sting parents and urge you to pass the recommendation on to parents on other teams. If you are like me, much of the material you already know and use, much reminds you of things you'd forgotten and some of it is new. The material is relevant not just to being a soccer parent but to parenting in general and it's all positive. Sign up is easy, it's an enjoyable evening so, is there any good reason not to go?”
“The Coaches workshop was beneficial with its coaching tools, goals and themes for positive attitudes. The experience was enriching and I think that anybody that works with children should be exposed to the workshop.”
“On Tuesday night, I dragged my weary bones to the PCA workshop. Having been to my share of positive parenting events over the years, I kind of expected the same old stuff. But being new to the soccer world, and listening to [our team’s coach’s] great press I decided to give it a shot. This was much more than the same old stuff. It handled a lot of the difficult stuff like how to talk to your daughter meaningfully when things don't go well on the field, how to use techniques such as "sandwiching" when trying to make a sensitive point with your child, using the 5:1 positive ratio and the justification behind these techniques. The speaker, Mike Legarza, was an earnest, helpful and very funny coach and parent. I highly recommend the workshops to all of you.”
“..I highly recommend it. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. We thought it was very well done. It had something everyone could use with their teams and gave us a lot to think about.”
“There is a need to improve the attitudes of many coaches and parents and the PCA program helps. I think the hardest part is to get the people who need it the most to get with the program. ..’Can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.’ It's hard enough when you support the ideas and are trying to use them. I'm hoping over the next couple years we'll see more of the results in our league/club as the message spreads. Our team went to the Commissioner's Cup tournament recently and I did get more of a feel for some of the attitudes outside our league. We saw some ‘bad attitudes’ among players and coaches. Clearly it will help our kids as PCA spreads its influence throughout the state.”
“As a parent of a Bay Oaks player, I was thrilled to see this announcement. It answers a question I have had about the JLYSL and Bay Oaks leadership. It is very important to me that the leaders of our soccer programs be in alignment with this approach to coaching. As much as my daughter likes to win, it is far more important to me that soccer be a positive, character-building experience.”
“I went to the first coaches workshop and it was great. Promotional-Advertising and continued word of mouth will build your program during this 1st year. I think JLYSL is doing an outstanding job. As we play other teams each week the play, sportsmanship, and honoring the game is evident on the sidelines and on the field. The girls on our team (from parent feedback) are having a blast. I believe by the end of the season JLYSL will have more girls and boys continue with the sport of soccer into the spring and next year. Also the parents will come on board in during your second year.”
“Continue to spread the word. This material works.”
