Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)
The Jack London Youth Soccer League is deeply committed to a culture of positive coaching, an environment where children can physically and emotionally thrive while learning to play the Beautiful Game. Our League is a place where:
Winning is a goal in youth sports, but there is a second, more important goal of using sports to teach life lessons through positive coaching. In the US, youth are dropping out of sports at an alarming rate. A major contributing factor is the "win at all cost" mentality of many parents and coaches that creates a pressure filled environment for the kids and ultimately turns them away from sports. That’s a loss because children participating in organized sports tend to achieve higher results in school, develop excellent interpersonal skills, and lead healthier lives.
Our League works with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to provide live, research-based training workshops and practical tools for coaches and parents to get them on the same page about what it means to Honor the Game. This education supports the adults -- coaches & parents -- who shape the youth sports experience.
We want a culture where kids love to play soccer. They look forward to practices and games as times when they have fun and learn. The joy they find in playing will last a lifetime.

Requirements
Because we are deeply committed to a culture of positive coaching for our children, participation in our Positive Coaching program is required for ALL parents and coaches.
All new parents are expected attend a PCA workshop in the first season their child plays. All Clubs are expected to make a PCA workshop available to their new parents. Many Clubs make a PCA workshop part of an orientation meeting for U8 parents. Check with your Club about upcoming PCA workshops.
All parents are expected to sign a PCA Parent Pledge (a.k.a. Parent Agreement) and submit it to their child’s coach. Regardless of whether you are a parent of a new or returning player, you must sign a PCA Parent Pledge every year. This Parent Pledge is also available in Spanish.
All Head Coaches are required to attend a PCA workshop. Only teams with the Head Coach attending a workshop will be invited to the JLYSL Tournament, be eligible for Club financial support for tournament fees at other tournaments, be permitted to represent JLYSL at Commissioner's Cup, Association Cup and State Cup events. Attendance at past workshops counts towards this requirement.
All Coaches are expected to read and sign the PCA Coach Job Description (a.k.a. Coach's Agreement). Regardless of whether you are a new or returning coach, you must read and sign the PCA Coach Job Description each year. Regardless if you are a coach of a recreational (Class IV) or select coach (Class III or Class I), you must read and sign the PCA Coach Job Description each year.
All Coaches should collect signed PCA Parent Pledges from the parents on their team every year. Many Clubs supply coaches with hardcopies of the PCA Parent Pledge in their Coaches Folder, Coaches Packet or Coaches Binder.
The above is the Jack London Youth Soccer League's minimum requirement for participation. Your Club may have a more specific requirement or additional participation requirements. Check with your Club for more information. All coaches and parents in the League are welcome, free of charge, to attend Club and JLYSL sponsored PCA workshops.

Get Involved
If you enjoyed one of PCA workshops, get involved. We always need help organizing and helping out at workshops.
