Referee Training and Licensing Schedule

Grassroots Referee Training
First Time Grassroots Referees must:
  • Complete the online course offered in the US Soccer Learning Center
  • Attend an in-person field session (estimated 3 hours)
  • Complete an NCSI background check if over 18
  • Complete the SafeSport course.

The USSF course fee is $75 and requires an annual renewal each year you referee.
The background check costs $30 and must be completed before the field session.
New Referees must also purchase a Referee Uniform Kit

For more information see Becoming A New Referee.  Click here to see the list of upcoming Grassroots Referee training courses.

Anybody can take the course, regardless of your experience. You will learn everything you need to know to start refereeing lower-level games. There are additional training opportunities once you have the license that enable you to work older and more competitive games.  You should be 14 or older to take the course, although 13-year olds who will turn 14 during the season immediately following the course are eligible.

All Entry Level Courses that end prior to June 25th will be registered for the current year. Students that successfully complete these courses will receive a Referee badge for the current year and can begin refereeing immediately. Referees are required to renew their license annually for the upcoming season.
Referees that complete their Entry Level Referee Course on or after July 1 will be registered for the next year and receive a Referee badge. These new referees will be able to referee the remaining season in addition to also being able to referee the next year before needing to renew their annual license.

Referees already licensed are encouraged to check with CNRA or US Soccer for additional training and development opportunities. Online courses are being published often, and can be reviewed on demand! Go to https://www.cnra.net/on-demand-web-training/ for a selection!
